How To Build Healthy Habits

healthy-habits

A new year, new you! Right?

Hmm... Maybe.

A lot of people tell me they "just want to build healthy habits". And that's great! The idea is great. The intention is great.

But what's not great is that "building healthy habits" just isn't easy.

Here's what a lot of people's perception of "being healthy" is:

  • Do cardio
  • Strength train
  • Meditate/yoga
  • Eat more greens
  • Eat more protein
  • Drink more water
  • Sleep 7-9 hours a night
  • Workout 4 - 6 times a week for hours on end

... All while having a full time job, relationships, family, etc!

Sounds kinda ridiculous when you put it down on paper, right?

And that's where a lot of people fall short, get discouraged, and then put it off until next week. Or next month. Or next year!

Does that cycle sound familiar?

"... let's realize that your perception of health is different from someone else's perception of health..."

So how can you start though? And how can you make it sustainable? We definitely want to try and live healthier lifestyles because a healthier lifestyle is associated with a longer, high quality life.

First, let's realize that your perception of health is different from someone else's perception of health! Don't assume that we all the same experiences with our health. So someone else's health will look different from yours.

Also understand that not all of us have the same perception of "healthy." We've all been held to different standards, have different backgrounds and upbringings; but we know from science, there is a certain standard that dictates a healthier, longer life (healthy lean body mass percentage, level of activity, etc.).

Remember that your health is more than the calories you eat everyday and the number on the scale. Health is more than just how you look and how much you weigh. The habits you form will help carry you on days where you struggle and will help you move forward when motivation wavers.

Your journey to health may look different from someone else's, so don't try and copy someone else's health journey just because they look a certain way.

Your health is so much more than how much you weigh, so get rid of the scale when it comes to measuring your progress.

Your health is so dependent on your body's abilities, so train and focus on your performance more than how much you look or just burning calories.

Remember, you are allowed to dislike certain things about your body still, so don't feel discouraged when you can't get in that mindset of perfect body love. You are allowed to want and change certain things, but don't let that take away from treating and fueling your body correctly and giving it what it needs to thrive.

Remember that you're in this for the long haul, and we don't see changes overnight.

Laura Su, BS Exercise Science, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, Powerlifter, Entreprenuer

I'm just a girl who fell in love with movement in high school and now wants to bring the freedom that exercise brings to everyone else.

I started working out with the desire to look a certain way but eventually found the sense of accomplishment and clarity that training for performance brought. Now I want to help everyone, especially women, to learn how to train and eat for their health and performance and realize that when you do that, the looks you desire are simply a positive side effect.

In my spare time, I enjoy powerlifting, horseback riding, sleeping, and hanging out with my boyfriend. I hope you enjoy my posts and keep reading along!
